The journey into Yoruba spirituality is one of transformation, reverence, and reconnection with ancient wisdom. My recent initiation into Ifa as an Iyanifa was not just a ceremony; it was an immersive experience that opened doors to understanding the profound teachings of Orunmila, the deity of wisdom. In this blog, I’ll share lessons learned from my initiation and how they’ve influenced my work and personal growth.

The Path to Ifa

My journey into Yoruba spirituality began with a desire to deepen my connection to ancestral practices. Ifa, a system of divination and spirituality practiced by the Yoruba people, is much more than a religion—it’s a way of life rooted in harmony, balance, and respect for the natural and spiritual world.

Before my initiation, I spent months preparing mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. This process included studying Yoruba culture, engaging in personal reflection, and building relationships with those who embody the principles of Ifa.

The Initiation Experience

Traveling to Osogbo, Nigeria, for the initiation was both humbling and life-affirming. The rituals, chants, and teachings were deeply symbolic, each step designed to align me with the wisdom of Orunmila and my destiny (ori). The sense of community and the warmth of the people I met made the experience even more profound.

One of the most striking lessons from the initiation was the importance of humility and openness. In Ifa, the willingness to learn and embrace change is paramount. This resonated deeply with me, especially as someone who guides others on their spiritual journeys.

Integrating Ifa into My Work

Since my initiation, I’ve found ways to weave the teachings of Ifa into my offerings. Whether through ceremonies, consultations, or educational workshops, the values of interconnectedness, respect, and balance are at the heart of what I do.

For example, the Yoruba concept of iwapele (gentle character) has influenced how I approach my role as a healer and teacher. By embodying patience and compassion, I aim to create spaces that nurture growth and understanding.

Lessons for All

Even if you’re new to Yoruba spirituality, there are universal lessons to be learned:

  1. Community Matters: Life is not meant to be lived in isolation. Seek out and nurture supportive relationships that feel safe, reciprocal and nurturing.

  2. Respect for Nature: Aligning with the rhythms of the natural world can bring clarity and peace.

  3. Embrace Your Path: Trust in your ori—your personal destiny—and take steps to fulfill it with courage and authenticity.

My initiation into Ifa is just the beginning of a lifelong journey. The wisdom I’ve gained has enriched not only my personal life but also the work I do with clients. If you’re curious about Yoruba spirituality or seeking ways to honor your own path, know that the journey starts with openness and respect.
