Alright, so there have been some debates on how to identify between Boof (or shitty weed), Mids (the “it will get you high, but it ain’t nothin’ spectacular”), and the premium cannabis (the stuff we should all be smoking).
Boof, in my book, is defined as cannabis that holds no standards for anyone of any knowledge of this plant—offering little to no medicinal value to anyone. It can be toxic depending on what was left behind by the cultivator. Boof lacks terpenes. You can't smell anything up close, barely anything in the jar or container or bag. Minimal to no terpenes are released when you break up the flower. It’s usually not flushed correctly, which means it will likely have black ash and is short ad upon consumption. When not cured perfectly, it frequently goes out or does not stay lit. I wouldn’t recommend keeping this, cooking with, or consuming this flower. If you are a first-time grower, Boof is acceptable, and you will do better; keep going. Many of us consider Boof the modern equivalent of Mexican brick weed. If you know, you know.
“Mids. A relatively new term but accurate ad. This flower can be deceiving. It may look terrific and have a decent terpene profile or smell. She will trick you, so be aware. Sometimes there is no way to tell mids unless you smoke her. When you end up smoking her, you find a few things happening here. She either goes out frequently or has black ash and harsh smoke. You will notice a lack of terpene profile or natural smell on the inhale and exhale. It potentially could not be flushed correctly or cured correctly.
However, if you find a combination of cure, flush, and lack of terp profile, unfortunately, you are smoking boof.
Premium cannabis, this is the stuff we should ALL be smoking. This type of flower will have terpenes or smell smacking you upon opening the container. Baggie or not. You can see the crystalline reflections called trichomes with the bare eye. The next level is CannaPORN, where the crystal trichomes break up and pour out of the grinder. Personal favorite moment for me right there.
Once premium cannabis is lit, it stays lit. There is almost always a beautiful nice white ash. People can argue this point, but I’ve never smoked premium flower with black ash. There is also a different profile on inhaling versus exhaling.
You will usually find this cannabis has been carefully grown by folks who are NOT cutting corners and deeply love the plant. This is the stuff the regulated market should only be selling. However, I find it usually on the legacy market. Occasionally you’ve got a dispensary owner that cares. I know several, and they always have the “terpiest” and mostly lovingly grown stuff.
Good luck as you begin your search for the premium cannabis flower. It is a beautiful journey compared to finding self. That may be too deep for this blog, but I’m okay with that.
